Many Americans mistakenly think that voter suppression, gerrymandering and the like are modern phenomena, that there was a golden era before, say, Nixon or the like. Sad to say, dirty tricks are as old as the party system and the American press. Todd Smyth catalogs the history of GOP tricks here. Worthy reading, if you do not want the same to occur in 5 days.

Make no mistake, the Dems have had their own history. One reason I like Obama so much is that he seems to succeed in spite of not answering dirty trick with dirty trick.

the mother of dirty tricks is...
... the one where they lull you into thinking that your candidate is well in the lead, and there's no need to cast your vote. The polls are showing Obama in the lead, and the Republicans, while paying lip service to the continued campaign, are putting their money on fewer than necessary Obama voters making the effort to cast a ballot.
